The IMF chief asked about Lithuania’s plans to adopt the euro during her meeting with the prime minister and stated that the Fund supported this choice by Lithuania despite temporary difficulties in the euro zone, the prime minister’s press service has said in a press release.
“We emphasized that we would seek to adopt the euro in 2015,” Butkevičius told reporters after the meeting.
“People’s trust in the euro is weakening somewhat in the euro zone countries and other European Union’s (EU) Member States and we actually need to explain the reasons for that to the public,” he added.
This is the first visit by an IMF chief to Lithuania since Michel Camdessus came 16 years ago, in 1997. Lithuania has been a member of the IMF since 1992. The Fund currently has 188 member countries. It works to foster international monetary cooperation, secure financial stability, facilitate international trade, promote high employment and sustainable economic growth, and reduce poverty around the world.
