Prime Minister: Lithuania won't negotiate on energy reforms and long-term supplies with Gazprom

Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius says that Lithuania will not negotiate on delaying the implementation of the EU's Third Energy Package and on long-term gas supply contracts during talks with Russia's gas giant Gazprom, the business daily Verslo Žinios reports.

"The government has given a mandate to the negotiators. They cannot negotiate on a postponement of the implementation of the Third Energy Package in Lithuania. The package is planned to be implemented in Lithuania in December 2014 to coincide with the planned launch of the operation of the liquefied natural gas terminal. There will be no postponements," Butkevičius told the paper.

"Another red line is that we cannot sign a long-term gas supply contract with Gazprom committing ourselves to purchasing a certain amount of gas and paying a certain price. From 2015 onwards, Gazprom must become a gas market participant on an equal footing with other participants, because the terminal will be operating and we will be able to buy gas in a competitive market," he said.
