Retiring politics veteran Česlovas Juršėnas will dedicate his time to memoirs and encyclopedias

Lithuania's Parliamentary Vice-Speaker Česlovas Juršėnas has decided not to run for parliament this fall, saying he would work on encyclopedias and write memoirs instead.

"Work on encyclopedias will be the main thing. The Universal Lithuanian Encyclopedia is being published, there will be 25 volumes instead of the initially planned 20. Two volumes are published every year," Juršėnas, a parliamentarian since 1990 and a member of the Social Democratic Party, told Žinių Radijas news radio on Wednesday.

"There are two more publications in connection to these projects – the regional encyclopedia Lithuania: the first volume is about Lithuania, the second and third feature biographies, and the fourth should also be biographies, but the fourth one can only be published after completion of all 25 volumes of the Universal Lithuanian Encyclopedia," he added.

Juršėnas also pledged to contribute to the second volume of the History of Lithuania. In his words, the work will take about three years.

The parliamentary vice-speaker said he would also write memoirs in the future.

Juršėnas, 74, has been an MP without interruption since 1990 but decided not to run for parliament in the October elections. He said he would, nevertheless, not turn his back on politics.

"The older generation has to step aside but not entirely leave the political arena, I am not planning to leave, there will be work but we should make room for the younger," said Juršėnas.
