Valentinas Stundys to run for HU-LCD leadership instead of Irena Degutiene

After former Speaker of the Seimas Irena Degutiene announced her decision on Monday not to run for the position of chairman of the Homeland Union – Lithuanian Christian Democrats, MP Valentinas Stundys decided to challenge existing party leader and ex-Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius.

„Yes, I have made the decision. I will run,“ Stundys told BNS on Monday.

He also confirmed that his decision was related to Degutiene's refusal to run.

Stundys, former chairman of the Lithuanian Christian Democrats, also said his decision was determined by the situation in the party.

„I've made the decision because of the internal situation in the party, internal discussions that we need to consider the party's prospects and identity issues. There are different opinions about that,“ the politician told BNS.

The Homeland Union – Lithuanian Christian Democrats is scheduled to hold a party convention in late April or early May. The party's chairman is expected to be elected by then.
