"I hope that my experience will be sufficient, because I have administered many projects and I have done other work," Jukna told reporters after his 15-minute meeting with the president.

"We spoke about Lithuania's agricultural policies, negotiations in the European Union, (Lithuania's EU) presidency, and problems in the agricultural sector," he said, without giving more details.

The 44-year-old candidate has been working at the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (formerly the Veterinary Academy) since 1991.

Jukna is the chairman of the Labour Party's Rural Affairs Committee and a member of the British Society of Animal Science.
