Vytautas Landsbergis says he achieved his goal even though he lost election to lead Lithuanian conservative party

Even though MEP Vytautas Landsbergis did not win the recent election to head the Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats, he believes that his purpose for running for chairmanship has been achieved - the air of stagnation in the party has been eliminated.

"What did I expect? I have said from the very start that I hoped to eliminate certain stagnation in the party. It seems to me that I have achieved this goal," Landsbergis told BNS on Tuesday when asked about his expectations from the election.

"The results are the way they are," he said.

The party's incumbent chairman Andrius Kubilius was reelected to continue as the leader of Lithuanian conservatives late on Monday. He has chaired the party since 2003.

Kubilius received 5,166 and Landsbergis got 4,501 votes.

The results will be officially confirmed at a party caucus scheduled for May 12.
