"We propose preserving authentic place-names of ethnic Lithuanian lands and spell them using the state language, and also spell names and surnames of citizens in documents using the state language, unify the state Lithuanian language exam, and preserve Lithuanian schools in ethnic Lithuanian lands," the commission said in a resolution presented at a Friday press conference by Irena Gasperavičiūtė, a commission member and head of the Lithuanian community in Poland.
The Lithuanian government is currently considering the issue of spelling of non-Lithuanian personal names in ID documents. Social Democratic Minister of Justice Juozas Bernatonis plans to submit proposals on the matter to the Cabinet later this month.
The Ministry of Justice has also been assigned to draft a bill on allowing spelling personal names using non-Lithuanian characters in documents. The move is linked to requests by Lithuania's Polish-speaking citizens and Lithuanians married to foreign nationals.
