Held on the occasion of the Year of Museums, the project is intended to launch a series of educational programs, excursions and exhibitions to present Lithuanian heritage stored in regional museums.
Culture Minister Arūnas Gelūnas, chairman of the state commission for the year of museums, said the main advantage of the project was publicity of museum operations.
"Our museums are a huge asset to Lithuania, which we will enshrine over the coming year and discover gems that are currently in the dark and get little attention," the minister said, adding that museums received 1.5 million litas (EUR 435,000) more in funding for 2012, the Year of Museums.

A project entitled Two Centuries of Museums is kicking off in Lithuania this week, by which 87 museums across the country aim to become more open to the public.
