Archaeological findings reveal 17-century Vilnius to have been larger than thought before

New archaeological findings dating from 16-17 centuries show that Vilnius was a larger city at that time than it has been believed so far. Archeologists, carrying out excavation work in the Bernardine Gardens, a park in central Vilnius, shared their findings on Friday.

"At least the residential area of Vilnius was larger than it has been believed until now. We thought before that there were almost no buildings in the Bernardine Gardens in the Middle Ages. The chance is that we won't find any valuable layer, but everything is totally different from what it seemed to be," archeologist Mindaugas Mačiulis told journalists on Friday.

The findings include a fragment of a defense wall, a paved front of the Vilnelė River, building remains, coins.
