Azerbaijan interested in participating in Lithuania’s LNG terminal project

Azerbaijan is interested in participating in Lithuania’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal project, Vice-Foreign Minister Khalaf Khalafov has said.

“The terminal planned by Lithuania is a very important project for Azerbaijan as it may provide strong impetus for the development of cooperation in the energy sector. Our national oil company may consider this issue. Of course, I think you understand that many projects today are considered in terms of economic benefit and security in the first place,” he said in an interview to the Lietuvos Žinios daily.

Khalafov also spoke about plans to develop transport cooperation between Azerbaijan and Lithuania. “We will consider navigation projects and will most probably talk about combined shipping.”

The fact that Lithuania is to take on the rotating EU Council presidency was inspiring, he says.

“Azerbaijan is a reliable EU partner in the Community’s efforts to ensure energy independence. This year, we have launched the implementation of a very important gas project, Shah Deniz II, which will, in the future, provide more than 10 million cubic meters of Azerbaijani gas to the EU markets. Also, we are implementing other ideas to open up the southern gas corridor, through which the energy resources of the Caspian region will reach Europe,” he told the daily.
