The participants are invited to share their personal memories and other forms of testimony: photographs, souvenirs, video and audio recordings, letters, posters, ads and self-published newspapers.
All memories and items will be registered, indexed, and digitized to be later included in the virtual 1989 European map. The originals will be returned to their owners, the parliament says on its website.
A similar campaign will be repeated in the public library of Panevėžys next week.
The Baltic Way was a peaceful political demonstration that took place on August 23, 1989. Around two million citizens of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia joined their hands to form a human chain spanning over 600 kilometers across the three Baltic states. It marked the 50th anniversary of the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact between the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany. The pact and its secret protocols divided Eastern Europe into spheres of influence and led to the occupation of the Baltic states in 1940.
