According to the survey carried out on January 11-20, the media is seen as trustworthy by 33 percent of respondents, while 26 percent said they did not trust it and the remaining did not give their opinion. The result is the lowest over the 15 years that Lithuania has been conducting the survey, although not very different from the outcome received over past years.

"The indicator is at its all-time lows but it corresponds to the EU average," Gaidys, director of Vilmorus pollster that conducted the survey, told BNS.

In his words, the Lithuanian media enjoyed the highest ratings in 1999-2000 when Lithuanians had more trust in the media than residents of any other European country.

According to the results published in Lietuvos Rytas daily, fire-and-rescue services are the most trusted institutions in Lithuania (90.5 percent), more than half of Lithuanians trust the Church (56 pct) and the Armed Forces (55 pct).

According to Gaidys, 1,031 people were interviewed for the survey.
