Deborah Ann McCarthy proposed as new US ambassador to Lithuania

US President Barack Obama intends to nominate diplomat Deborah Ann McCarthy as the new ambassador to Lithuania.

She would replace outgoing Ambassador Anne E. Derse who is bidding farewell to Lithuania this weekend, the US Embassy in Vilnius announces.

"I am grateful (Ms. McCarthy) has agreed to join this administration, and I’m confident she will serve ably in this important role. I look forward to working with her in the months and years ahead," Obama said in a press release circulated by the White House.

According to the statement, the appointment procedure has only been started, nevertheless McCarthy is expected to take the position in Vilnius shortly.

Derse had been working in Lithuania since October 2009.

Deborah Ann McCarthy, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, Class of Minister-Counselor, currently serves as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Economic and Business Affairs. 

Previous positions with the Department of State include Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Athens, Greece from 2008 to 2010, Special Coordinator for Venezuelan Affairs from 2006 to 2007, Senior Advisor for Counter Terrorism from 2004 to 2006, and Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement from 2002 to 2004. 

Additional overseas assignments include Consul General in Montreal, Canada (2001 to 2002), Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Managua, Nicaragua (1998 to 2001), and Economic Counselor in Paris, France (1996 to 1998) and Port au Prince, Haiti (1991 to 1993).  

Ms. McCarthy received a B.A. from the University of Virginia, and an M.A. and an M.S.F.S. from Georgetown University.
