Lithuanian Consul in Tbilisi Jomantas Pabiržis, who attended the public court hearing, told BNS that Vaitkevičius was released "without obligations."

"The Lithuanian citizen was released in the courtroom without obligation, including bail or surety," Pabiržis said.

"The charges were of economic character. They wanted to resume the case and were afraid, as they explained, that the person has one-way tickets, and this is why he was detained. But the court did not accept that argument and he was released," the diplomat said.

Vaitkevičius was detained on Wednesday when he planned to fly to Vilnius.

According to information available to BNS, Georgian authorities have resumed the investigation involving Vaitkevičius that was terminated in April. Sources say the businessman failed to meet his commitment to pay his partners 2 million US dollars in connection to the sale of his business.

Vaitkevičius is a former co-owner of Ioli Supermarket, the largest retailer in Georgia.
