"Ireland is so far the only country outside Lithuania offering the Lithuanian-language examination as an option in graduation exams. This was an initiative by Ireland's Education Ministry," the ministry's chancellor Dainius Numgaudis said at a meeting of the commission of the Seimas and world Lithuanians on Wednesday.

According to data available to Numgaudis, 259 students took the Lithuanian-language exam in Ireland last year.

"It is a very good indicator and a superb example. This all was made possible without any initiative from Lithuania," he said.

"As a state institution, we have included the idea of trying to get the interest of other countries among our key tasks. (...) We will attempt to promote the idea," said Numgaudis.

Ireland is the second most popular emigration destination among Lithuanians after the United Kingdom.
