Ex-leader of Belarus Stanislav Shushkevich allowed to enter Lithuania

The former leader of Belarus, Stanislav Shushkevich, has been allowed to come to Lithuania for the Wednesday's discussion on the relations between Belarus and the European Union (EU) a few days after Belarusian border guards told him about the ban to leave the country.

BNS learned at the Lithuanian parliament's European Information Bureau that Shushkevich had arrived at the discussion.

Last Sunday, Russia's Interfax news agency reported that the former Belarusian parliamentary speaker could not come to Lithuania after being notified by border guards about his inclusion in the list of people banned from leaving the country.

"A border guard in the rank of captain at Gudogai railway station on the Belorussian-Lithuanian border told me very politely that there were orders not to let me leave the country," Shushkevich told Interfax news agency.

Shushkevich was parliament speaker in 1990-1993, making him the head of state according to the then Constitution.
