Born in Mažeikiai, Liūnė Sutema, whose real name was Zinaida Nagytė-Katiliskienė, emigrated from Lithuania at the end of the World War II. She lived in Lemont, Illinois, since 1949.
"She was one of the outstanding figures in Lithuanian literature, a very warm person, she was indeed sincerely worried about the situation in Lithuania and was interested in the cultural life in the country," Lithuania's former president Valdas Adamkus told BNS.
The poet was awarded with the Lithuanian National Culture and Arts Prize in 2007.
