The more the European Union and Russia work together, the more they both benefit, Finnish President Sauli Niinisto has said in Vilnius on Tuesday.

"I am convinced that the more the European Union and Russia are working together, the more EU and Russia benefit. But maybe the most beneficiary are the results for the Baltic countries and Finland that are in between," he told journalists after a meeting with Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė.

The cooperation among countries of the Baltic region is key to cooperation with Russia, the Finnish president stressed.

"One very important thing is our common sea – the Baltic Sea. And we see a lot of cooperation around that too. We would like very much to enhance the Baltic Sea Strategy in the European Union politics," Niinisto said.

"We have also found out that this cooperation has been a good key to cooperate with Russia too. Maybe we could together think also how to go further this cooperation," he said.
