"Germany's support to the elimination of 'energy islands' in Europe is very important to Lithuania and the other Baltic states. Today we're in the breakthrough point on our road to energy independence, and the support from our friends is very important so that we can finish the projects that will settle one of the most sensitive problems in the region," the Foreign Minister said in Berlin.

During the meeting, the Lithuanian diplomacy chief suggested revising guidelines of further cooperation between Lithuania and Germany on the bilateral, EU and multilateral level.

"We have superb chances to take further steps based on the great results we have achieved and discuss ways of expanding cooperation to new areas, contributing to the reinforcement of stability and solidarity in Europe," Ažubalis noted.

The two ministers also addressed EU's long-term financial perspective and the public finance crisis.

"A consolidated Europe needs a budget that would fit our plans: ensure cohesion, implementation of a common market, as well as in the energy field," he added.

During a visit to the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, Ažubalis read a lecture "The Baltic Sea Region in the European Union," met with the foundation's president, European Parliament member Hans-Gert Pottering.

Germany ranks second among Lithuania's foreign trade partners and is the third-largest investor in Lithuania.
