The awards were handed over by Lithuania's Ambassador to France, Jolanta Balčiūnienė, earlier this week.
At a solemn ceremony in Paris, Balčiūnienė thanked Suremain for his significant contribution to the development of Lithuanian-French relations in the spheres of politics, economy, science, education and culture. The ambassador said the foundations of effective bilateral cooperation were laid during the time Suremain represented France in Lithuania.
Suremain served as French ambassador in 1991-1996. Diplomatic relations between Lithuania and France were restored in 1991.
Meanwhile Balčiūnienė wished Gueslin, author of scientific research and articles on Lithuania and the Baltic states, to continue his historic research which contributes to strengthening of bilateral scientific and cultural relations between the two countries.
Gueslin was one of the first Western European historians who started researching inter-war relations between the three Baltic states and France following the collapse of the Soviet Union.
