The German chancellor also pledged support to Lithuania when the Baltic country takes over the rotating EU Council presidency in the second half of this year, the president's spokeswoman has told BNS.
"Merkel called the president in Aachen and sincerely congratulated the people of Lithuania and personally the president on being awarded the Charlemagne Prize and pledged Germany's support to the Lithuanian EU presidency," spokeswoman Daiva Ulbinaitė told BNS.
The award ceremony will take place on Europe Day - May 9, 12:15pm, in the Charlemagne Palace, currently Aachen Town Hall. A solemn welcome speech will be given by the President of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz.
