County Louth resident Brendan McGuigan is wanted by Lithuanian law enforcement for his alleged support to a terrorist group, firearms possession and plans to smuggle firearms. Irish citizen Michael Campbell has already been sentenced to 12 years in prison in this case.
"Mr. Justice John Edwards ruled that he was not going to surrender Mr. McGuigan arising out of concerns about prison conditions in Lithuania," the Irish Independent writes.
Earlier this year, a court in Northern Ireland refused to extradite Michael Campbell's brother Liam, charged with weapons smuggling for the Real IRA, to Lithuania on grounds he was likely to be held in inhumane and degrading conditions, the newspaper writes.
McGuigan and Liam Cambell would stand trial on the same charges Michael Cambell was sentenced to 12 years in prison. Michael Campbell was detained in January 2008 when he bought weapons from an undercover agent in Lithuania.
