Lithuanian Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrius Krivas expressed Lithuania's position at a meeting with Belarusian Ambassador to Lithuanian Vladimir Drazhin on Wednesday, the ministry said.
"Such a decision runs counter to the provisions of the Espoo Convention, restricts the participation of Lithuanian citizens in events of this kind and does not add constructiveness to the Lithuanian-Belarusian dialogue on the issue of the safety of Astravets nuclear power plant," the ministry said in a statement.
The Belarusian Embassy in Lithuania has said recently that a meeting with the Lithuanian public and specialists on the environmental impact assessment of the nuclear facility is planned on August 17.
Lithuania's Ministry of Foreign Affairs also reminded that the Implementation Committee of the Espoo Convention concluded in April that Belarus had failed to provide necessary information on the nuclear power plant project, and Lithuanian experts were still looking into information provided by Belarus in June.
Lithuania has, on numerous occasions, criticized Belarus for failure to ensure safety of Astravets nuclear power plant which is situated just 50km from Vilnius.
Meanwhile Minsk previously accused Lithuania of failure to respond to proposals to hold consultation on the construction of the plant.
