Lithuania's honorary consuls to North America kick off meeting in Chicago

Lithuania's honorary consuls working in North America are starting a congress in Chicago on Friday to discuss the best ways of presenting Lithuania's culture and preserving Lithuanian heritage, the Foreign Ministry has announced.

According to a press release, the honorary consuls will be informed about Lithuania's upcoming chairmanship over the European Council and related plans in the North American region.

Participants of the meeting include Lithuania's Culture Minister Arūnas Gelūnas, Foreign Vice-Minister Evaldas Ignatavičius, Lithuania's ambassadors to the United States and Canada, Žygimantas Pavilionis and Gintė Damušytė, heads of Lithuanian consulates general to Chicago and New York, Skaistė Aniulienė and Valdemaras Sarapinas, in addition to 17 honorary consuls from the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The participants will attend events to mark the 50-year anniversary of the Lithuanian Foundation, meet with representatives of Lithuanian communities in the US and Canada, visit the Lithuanian World Center in Lemont and attend a service at a chapel of Jurgis Matulaitis.

Topics to be discussed over a working breakfast include projects promoting community relations between Lithuanians and Jews, as well as mutual understanding.

This is the first meeting of Lithuanian honorary consuls working in North America, the ministry said.
