Lithuania, member of 48 international organizations and a group of specialized, branch organizations, associations, foundations, and programs, is not paying all membership fees. For 2012 alone, the country will owe more than 2 million litas in membership fees, in addition to about 6.4 million litas owed from earlier years.
Mindaugas Lašas, director of the Foreign Ministry's Public Relations Division, said the general funding that would guarantee coverage of earlier debts and current commitments would amount to 22.9 million litas in 2012.
The highest debt – about 4.75 million litas – is owed to the United Nations (UN).
In Lašas' words, the debts accumulated during the economic downturn when allocations to Lithuania's international commitments were too small.
