The press release was circulated after the committee's informal meeting with Lithuanian delegates at the European Parliament (EP) on Friday.

The participants of the meeting emphasized that Lithuania's presidency over the EU Council in July-December 2013 "should be ambitious and focus, first of all, on matters that are relevant for all of Europe, not just Lithuania, and the results should have sustainable value."

According to the press release, MEPs Vytautas Landsbergis, Radvilė Morkūnaitė-Mikulėnienė, and MP Petras Auštrevičius said that Lithuania would have to focus on settling European matters and refrain from demonstrating the country's domestic problems.

MEP Algirdas Saudargas said: "Presidency is the worst time for solving one's national problems but is the best time to see how they're solved on the European level."

Members of the European Parliament and the Lithuanian Seimas agreed with the idea of focusing on Ukraine, which should sign its association treaty with the EU during Lithuania's presidency.

MEP Vilija Blinkevičiūtė said that EP President Martin Schulz had informally pledged to visit Lithuania during its presidency over the European Council.
