Lithuanian Defense Ministry reports successful military cooperation with Estonia

At a Tuesday's meeting with visiting Estonian Chief of Defense Brigadier General Riho Terras, Lithuania's Defense Minister Rasa Juknevičienė and Chief of Defense Lieutenant General Arvydas Pocius discussed Baltic military cooperation that they described as highly successful.

The two Lithuanian officials emphasized the need to stimilute it further, seek new cooperation initiatives and joint acquisitions. The Tuesday's meeting also addressed the necessity to harmonize Baltic defense planning processes and coordinate defense plans, the Lithuanian Defense Ministry said.

Speaking about smart defense, Juknevičienė and Terras said the NATO air-policing mission in the Baltic states was a superb example of smart defense, applauding the recent achievement of a long-term status for the mission.

According to the press release, other topics discussed at the meeting included defense funding, military reforms, international operation in Afghanistan, public opinions in Lithuania and Estonia about participation in the international mission.

On the second day of his visit in Lithuania, Terras is scheduled to meet with members of the parliamentary National Security and Defense Committee, visit the Air Surveillance and Control Command in Karmelava and the Motorized Infantry Brigade Iron Wolf in Rukla.

The ministry said that Lithuanian-Estonian military cooperation was carried out in accordance to a three-country plan for military and political cooperation among Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania signed on an annual basis and the bilateral Lithuanian-Estonian military cooperation scheme.

Lithuanian and Estonian soldiers participate in long term projects, including Baltron, Baltnet and Baldefcol.

This is Terras' first visit to Lithuania.
