Lithuanian Education Minister: More students need to choose vocational training over university degrees

University enrollment figures show growing popularity of physical and technological sciences, Lithuania's Minister of Science and Education Gintaras Steponavičius says.

"Today I can say that there's a certain shift to traditionally less popular technological, natural sciences. We believe efforts that have been made in promoting professions needed for the state and making them more appealing are bearing results," the minister said in an interview to BNS.

Steponavičius also said the long-term next goal was to make more young people choose higher education in Lithuania and to shift more than half of students to vocational studies. The minister also added that although enrolment to colleges had not ended yet, it was estimated that fewer people would be enrolled than needed by the labor market.

The education minister says the plan is to have more than a half of all students to be in the vocational training sector.

Although the final enrolment results have not been announced yet, Steponavičius estimates that around 60 percent of young people in Lithuania will study at universities and around 40 percent will receive education in vocational schools.
