The branch of the Lithuanian Embassy is situated on the premises of the Finnish Embassy in Zagreb. The opening ceremony on Monday was attended by Speaker of the Lithuanian Seimas, Vydas Gedvilas, and Croatian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vesna Pusic.
Croatia will become an EU member state on July 1 and Lithuania will take over the EU presidency on the same day.
"The Lithuanian diplomat at the new branch will help ensure the EU presidency's continuous attention to Croatia, represent interests of Lithuania, and implement other presidency-related functions," the ministry said in a statement.
Gedvilas also awarded the Croatian minister with a Lithuanian Diplomacy Star – an official award of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania.
"Today, Croatia is a Western Balkan star which is set to join the European Union in a month and light the path for other countries in the region," the Lithuanian Seimas speaker said.
Pusic also paid attention to the fact that a branch of the Croatian Embassy in Sweden will soon be opened in Vilnius.
The Lithuanian Embassy branch in Zagreb will not carry out consular functions which will still be carried out by the country's diplomatic representation in Vienna.
