Lithuanian Parliament declares 2013 Year of Dialects

The Lithuanian Parliament adopted a resolution on Tuesday declaring 2013 the Year of Dialects.

According to the resolution, the decision was backed by the Seimas following the European Union's call for preserving local dialects, and taking into account the fact that "the live tradition of Lithuanian dialects is dying away."

The resolution, initiated by conservative MP Julius Dautaras, also calls on the government to allocate funds for various programs preserving dialects.
