"Being glad about successful cooperation between the United States and Lithuania in the areas of security, foreign policy, energy security, we hope for closer bilateral economic cooperation through the development of mutually beneficial programs of energy, trade, investment as well as scientific and cultural exchange," Gedvilas was quoted as saying in a statement.

The speaker also underlined that the US has always been Lithuania's key strategic partner, who helped restore its independence and integrate into Western democratic structures, and is also a key ally within NATO, the Seimas speaker said in the statement.

Gedvilas said at the meeting that talks on a comprehensive free trade agreement will start just before the Lithuanian EU Presidency, which will open further ways for bilateral communication and cooperation in the area of economy.

Gedvilas introduced the ambassador to priorities of the Lithuanian EU Presidency.

"The speaker of the Seimas put special emphasis on energy security which is important for ensuring wellbeing of the whole state. Among key measures to achieve this goal, Gedvilas mentioned power links with Sweden and Poland, construction of the LNG terminal, and promotion of alternative energy resources," the statement said.

McCarthy presented her letter of credence last month. She is a career diplomat who has been principal deputy assistant secretary of State for Economic and Business Affairs, responsible for global economic engagement and negotiations, since September 27, 2010. Previously, she worked in France, Nicaragua, Greece, and Haiti.

McCarthy has replaced Anne E. Derse as US ambassador to Lithuania who served since October 2009. Her ambassadorial term ended last autumn.
