Lithuania's Parliament Speaker Vydas Gedvilas says he does not want to disclose his position about Turkey's membership in the European Union (EU).

"I simply do not want to state my opinion today, this will be discussed in one voice with all countries of the European Union, discussions are underway abut this, Turks have been knocking on the EU door for years. Turkey still has to do a lot of work to become a candidate," Gedvilas said in an interview to Žinių Radijas (News Radio) on Wednesday about his stance on Turkey's EU membership.

He spoke on the day when a delegation headed by Turkish President Abdullah Gul is coming to Lithuania.

"A historic moment. The Turkish president is coming to Lithuania for the first time," he said in comment of the visit.

Turkey's efforts of joining the EU have been stalled recently, and since its 2005 application for EU membership Turkey has opened negotiations only in 13 of the 35 so-called negotiating chapters that EU hopefuls have to agree upon. Turkey hopes to start talks on two more chapters during Lithuania's EU Council presidency in the second half of this year.
