"We do not have to make any concessions to them, we have to be friends on the principle of parity, I can again restate the phrase I said to Poles – please love Lithuanians in Poland in a way that we love Poles in Lithuania," Gedvilas who visited Poland last week said in an interview to Žinių Radijas (News Radio) on Wednesday morning.

The parliamentary speaker said that national minorities in both states should enjoy the same conditions, while differences in legal systems should be harmonized by experts. "The details should be coordinated by ministries, there are experts who have to coordinate the entire system, we have to communicate as equal partners," he said.

Asked to comment on Poland's attitude towards the participation of the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania in the ruling coalition, Gedvilas noted: "They saw a sign that national minorities are indeed not harmed."

Different opinions about the situation of national minorities have been causing tensions between Lithuania and Poland for the past few years.
