In Grybauskaitė's words, ending energy isolation in the Baltics and consolidating energy security will ensure successful development of the entire region.

"We have many common goals and always feel a friendly shoulder of our brotherly nation. Together, we have successfully overcome the economic crisis, we are negotiating a new EU's financial perspective and integrating into the regional power network. Together, we are creating a functioning gas market," the Lithuanian President's Office cited the leader as saying.

In her words, close inter-parliamentary cooperation is significant in defending our people's interests on international arena, in particular during negotiations on a new financial framework of the EU.

According to the press release, the president underlined that strict adherence to fiscal discipline had enabled Lithuania and Latvia to successfully defeat the economic crisis, but the need remains to continue responsible financial policies. The European Fiscal Compact has already been ratified by six EU member states, Latvia among them.

"I hope that the Lithuanian Parliament will follow Latvia's example and ratify the treaty," the president said.

The meeting also focused on cooperation between the parliaments of the two countries aiming to preserve the Baltic identity, culture and heritage.
