Lithuanians' social self-perception: 1 percent see themselves as rich, 25 percent poor

71.8 percent of people living in Lithuania’s major cities count themselves as middle class and 1 percent consider themselves rich, according to a poll published by the weekly magazine Veidas.

Slightly more than one-fourth, or 25.2 percent, describe themselves as poor.

A comparison with previous polls showed that, a decade ago, the percentage of those who dared to declare themselves rich made up just 0.2–0.3 percent, the weekly noted.

The same could be said about the society’s attitude towards the rich. The percentage of those saying that they commended and respected rich people increased to 48.2 percent, from slightly more than 42 percent six year ago. However, the percentage of those resentful towards the well-off increased as well – to 31 percent, from 13.2 percent back in 2006.

Market researcher Prime Consulting polled 500 residents of the country’s five major cities for the Veidas magazine on 25 to 27 June.
