"The existing situation of the Paneriai Memorial did not satisfy neither the Lithuanian society nor the local and international Jewish community and the Ministry of Culture. On January 1, 2014, maintenance of the memorial will be handed over to the Vilna Gaon State Jewish Museum," Romas Jarockis, a vice-minister of culture, said in a statement on Thursday.

The Government of Lithuania on Monday approved an action plan for comprehensive maintenance of Paneriai Memorial in 2013-2014, drafted by the Ministry of Culture.

Over 100,000 people of various ethnicities, mainly Jews, where executed by the Nazis in the Paneriai wood during the period of German occupation in 1941-1944.
