„Vilnius has a well-deserved right to be proud of being the city where the prominent personality developed, and granting Venclova the title of Vilnius honorary citizen would reinforce the connections between the poet and his beloved city forever,“ reads a proposal submitted by the directorate of Vilnius memorial museums.

According to the proposal, 2013 marks 35 years since one of Venclova's most famous works – a dialogue written together with Czeslaw Milosz on Vilnius as a form of spiritual life – in Paris. From the dialogue, many people around the globe for the first time heard about problems Lithuania and Vilnius were faced with.

Venclova was also among the five founders of the Helsinki Group in Vilnius.

The proposal should be discussed at the nearest meeting of the Vilnius City Council scheduled for April 3. In case of approval, Venclova would become the 11th honorary citizen of the Lithuanian capital.
