Polish diplomats trying to drive a wedge between Baltic states?

Some Polish diplomats are seeking to split the Baltic states by proposing to move the NATO air-policing mission from Lithuania to Estonia, says Tomas Jermalavičius, researcher at the Tallinn-based international defense studies center.

"There are certain Polish diplomats who are trying to drive a wedge between the three Baltic countries. This is a very serious issue," Jermalavičius told the Estonian daily Postimees.

The paper writes that the Amari air base to be completed in Estonia in a couple of years will be more modern than Lithuania's Šiauliai. Not using the option is not in Estonia's or NATO best interests.

Peeter Kuimet, spokesman for the Estonian Defense Ministry, said that it was Estonia's aim that in the future one of three annual rotation could take place from Amari.
