Pope appoints new Archbishop of Vilnius

Pope Francis on Friday accepted the resignation of Lithuanian Cardinal Audrys Juozas Bačkis and appointed Bishop Gintaras Grušas as the new metropolitan archbishop of Vilnius.

Bačkis' resignation was submitted in line with the provisions of the canon law after he turned 75, the secretariat of the Conference of Bishops said.

Grušsas will start his new position on April 23.
