Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius: Unwise statements by individual ministers cannot determine Lithuanian-Polish relations

Lithuanian and Polish relations cannot be determined by "not very wise" statements by individual ministers, Lithuanian Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius said on Tuesday, commenting on statements by Polish Minister of Foreign Affairs Radoslaw Sikorski about Lithuania.

"Relations between states are not determined by ministers saying things that sometimes are not very wise," Kubilius said in an interview for the Lithuanian Radio.

His comment followed Sikorski's statement last month that Poland is awaiting better relations with Lithuania after the parliamentary election.

"We are glad about great relations with Estonia and Latvia, and in the relations with Lithuania we hope for a new opening-up from the government which will be formed after the election in October," Sikorski told the Polish parliament in late March.

The Lithuanian prime minister noted that Lithuanian-Polish relations are not bad but sometimes are too emotional.

"To my mind, those relations are not very bad. Perhaps sometimes they are more emotional then necessary. And in general, we should focus on key goals, key tasks in this region. I think the development of joint energy infrastructure and transport infrastructure projects is what we should focus on today," Kubilius said ahead of an international economics forum in Poland on Thursday.

The Lithuanian prime minister expects to have "an opportunity to have a word or two" with his Polish counterpart Donald Tusk.

Kubilius believes it would be beneficial for both Poland and neighboring countries if Warsaw realized its vital role in the development of projects important for the region as it would help not "be lost in minuscule things."
