Russia eases customs checks on perishable goods from Lithuania

Russian customs officers have started to allow Lithuanian trucks carrying perishable goods through easier, without subjecting them to extra detailed checks, a spokesman for the national road carriers' association Linava said on Wednesday afternoon.

"This is not being announced officially, but we have confirmation from drivers that trucks with perishables are being let through without thorough checks," Gytis Vincevičius told BNS.

Linava president Algimantas Kondrusevičius told BNS that they had received information about some improvement in the situation on Wednesday, but added that it was impossible to get a general picture from this.

"Haulers have told us today that they are going through with perishable products as normal. As to others, it's difficult to say, because we have a very fragmented picture. We don't have all information and we can't compare the current situation to what it was last week," he said.

The European Commission (EC) on Wednesday warned Russia that the tightened customs procedures imposed on Lithuanian haulers could be a violation of the WTO requirements.

Last week, Russia tightened checks on goods transported by Lithuanian haulers, causing significant delays and losses.
