The plans to earmark the additional sum to the EHU on the occasion of its 20 years of operations was announced by Sweden's State Secretary Sofia Strand, the EHU said.
Since the EHU was closed down in Belarus in 2004, the Swedish government has provided the Vilnius-based university with over 1.4 million euros in financial assistance.
The ceremony to mark the 20 years of operations held at the Swedish government building was attended by representatives of EHU managing board, top officials, students and the faculty, Lithuanian and Swedish diplomats and about 70 sponsors of the school.
"We are very grateful and understand that the aid binds us to doing everything to meet the hopes of the tax-payers of the countries that support us," EHU rector Annatoly Mikhailov said.
In his words, the EHU should develop to be a strong university and establish the tradition of a free university in Belarus, which is fighting for change.
The EHU is a privately-owned non-profit university.
Founded in Belarus in 1992, the university had its license revoked by the regime of President Alexander Lukashenko. Efforts of the European Commission (EC), European and American governments, organizations and private sponsors allowed the university to reopen in Vilnius in June 2005. It was granted a status of a Lithuanian university in 2006.
It currently has nearly 2,000 students, mainly from Belarus.
