Two Lithuanian soldiers were injured in Chaghcharan, the capital of Afghanistan's Ghor province, on Sunday when their armed vehicle was hit by an anti-tank grenade, Lithuania's Ministry of National Defense has said.

One of the soldiers sustained a leg injury while the other was diagnosed with a severe concussion. The incident took place at 6 PM local time.

"The incident took place when soldiers were on their way back to the camp from patrol in Chaghcharan surroundings when their armed vehicle HMMWV was hit by an anti-tank grenade," the ministry said in a statement.

Captain Marius Varna, spokesman for the Joint Headquarters of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, told BNS that currently the soldiers are getting treatment in the camp-based hospital. The soldier with a concussion will be flown to a hospital in Mazar-i-Shariff on Monday for further check-up and treatment.

Lithuania plans to end its mission in Ghor this year. The last Lithuanian troops should leave the province in September. Lithuanian troops have served in the remote and one of the poorest regions on Afghanistan since 2005.

Not a single Lithuanian soldier was killed in Ghor last year, and the military sees this fact as a sign that the security situation is improving.
