Vilnius to hold traditional Street Music Day on Saturday

In line with tradition, which was started by singer and song author Andrius Mamontovas in 2007, every first Saturday in May professional musicians and amateurs flood into the streets, yards, public gardens, and squares of Vilnius to perform. This year Street Music Day will be organized on 19 May, the Vilnius Tourist Information Center reports.

Armed with various musical instruments they would play rock, classic, jazz, avant-garde, folk music and drum to the rhythms of Africa. It is a celebration of free creativity where public and musicians interact, writes LETA.

Event organizers from Riga, Tallinn, St. Petersburg and Minsk, who visited Vilnius Street Music Day in 2011, decided to bring the idea back home.

Having Vilnius as its cradle, the Street Music Day did not only spread throughout the entire country, but also crossed Lithuanian boarders – the author of the idea Andrius Mamontovas helped musicians from Riga and Minsk organize similar festivals in their cities.

On the same day, musicians from Georgia are going to express their solidarity to Lithuanian street musicians by going out to play in the streets of Tbilisi.
