|December 25, 2019 Published, Former residents of Pripyat briefly returned to their abandoned town on Wednesday to decorate a Christmas tree for the first time years since the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Footage shows people decorating the tree with old black and white photos and radiation-themed ornaments. The Chernobyl disaster occurred as a series of explosions. A fire at the fourth reactor led to radioactive fallout which dispersed over nearby countries. More than eight million people were exposed to increased levels of radiation. Chernobyl is considered to be the worst civil nuclear accident in human history. The immediate death toll from the incident itself reached 31, while thousands more suffered radiation-related illnesses.
