The 65th Sydney Film Festival – 6-17 June 2018
Franz Rogowski (Victoria, SFF 2015; Happy End, SFF 2017) and Sandra Hüller (Toni Erdmann, SFF 2016) lead this lyrical film about friendship and romance in a wholesale market.
Rogowski, who also appears in Transit at SFF this year, plays Christian, a shy man who takes a job at a wholesale market. There, he discovers a mysterious world between the aisles. Bruno from Beverages takes Christian under his wing, showing him the ropes and briefing him on the rivalries and alliances between the various departments. And when Christian meets the charming and enigmatic Marion (Hüller) from Sweets, he is smitten. Marion, he learns, is married, and their path to love will not be easy. Through these relationships, friendships, lives and deaths, the market’s aisles contain the full gamut of human interactions and emotions. Gentle and empathetic, In the Aisles is a film that lingers.
With the aid of affecting performances and a good eye for the virtuoso moves of a forklift truck, director Thomas Stuber mines the magical in the mundane. – Demetrios Matheou, Screen International
We could spend forever watching two such interesting actors as Hüller and Rogowski glimmer at each other. – Jessica Kiang, Variety
