After receiving word that a mysterious benfactor has arranged a gallery show for him, Finnegan Bell (Ethan Hawke) travels to New York City to display his art for the first time. There, he runs into Estella (Gwyneth Paltrow), a lost childhood love who toyed with his emotions and confused him with her changeable ways. Now involved with a wealthy businessman (Hank Azaria), Estella nonetheless renews her relationship with Finnegan, and once again confounds his emotions with a combination of lust and cruelty.
