Best movie pillow fight ever! Director Jean Vigo based this charming but anarchic film about rebellious boys at a strict boarding school on his own experiences. The faculty and administrators are petty and pedantic, and it’s gratifying to watch when the defiant youths finally revolt and pull off one of the finest pranks in cinema history. The pillow fight itself is slow motion artistry, but it’s only a foretaste of what’s to come. Banned in France until after Vigo’s death in 1946, the film’s influence is evident in movies made by such directors as Lindsay Anderson (“If….”), Francois Truffaut (“The 400 Blows”), and Richard Lester, along with The Beatles, in “A Hard Days Night.”
