Speaking on a new energy strategy, the prime minister said that a scenario without a nuclear facility has already been created and a scenario with a new nuclear power plant is still in the pipeline.
„I believe we will have final calculations in May,“ Butkevicius told journalists on Thursday.
„The program has two parts. The first one involves a strategic program with a nuclear power plant, and the second one is without it. So, the program without a nuclear power plant is ready, throroughly drafted and finished, and calculations on a nuclear power plant are still underway,“ the prime minister said.
Butkevicius had promised last winter that following conclusions of a working group, „in March it will be perfectly clear which way Lithuania will take.“
The majority of Lithuanian voters did not back the project in a non-binding referendum that was held alongside general elections on Oct. 14. Some 34.09 percent of those who cast ballots said „yes“ to building a nuclear power plant and 62.68 percent said „no“. The voter turnout was 52.58 percent.
Following the referendum, the Seimas obliged the government to submit „an economically optimal and consumer-friendly strategy of power provision.“ A Seimas resolution states that bills have to be put before parliament by May 15.
