The line will be closed in late September following unsuccessful efforts to direct new cargo to the route and increase revenue, the company has said on Thursday.
"Unfortunately, our efforts were fruitless. This means that the results of the line will continue to deteriorate and, in light of new regulations on the sulphur content in fuels, which provide for the use of low-sulphur marine fuels starting January 2015, we do not believe that we would be able to make the line profitable in the future," DFDS Seaways Vice-president Anders Refsgaard said in a press release.
The company will continue to operate its passenger and cargo service to the German port of Kiel and will use the Klaipėda-Sassnitz ferry on other routes, he says.
DFDS Seaways has operated the Klaipėda-Sassnitz ferry line since 2001.
The company currently operates nine routes and has seven ferries.
